Established in August 1957, formerly the Department of Hydraulics of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the Department of Hydraulics – Hydrology is one of the first units in the country to teach Hydraulics, Hydrology, and Oceanography in Vietnamese at the university level. After nearly seven decades of construction and development, the Department has continuously grown in terms of staff, facilities and scientific research capacity. Up to now, the Department has had 35 teachers who have been teaching: 4 Professors, 7 Associate Professors, 2 Doctors of Science, 09 Doctors, 7 Masters and 02 excellent teachers.

From the early difficult days of the resistance war, to the period of national construction and international integration, the Department has always been the core unit in training engineers, masters, and doctors in Hydraulic Engineering, making important contributions to the development of the School and the Vietnamese Construction Industry.
Along with the teaching task, the Department has chaired and participated in many domestic and international scientific and technological topics, compiled textbooks and specialized documents, and at the same time undertaken the task of consulting and appraising many large hydroelectric and irrigation projects across the country. Promoting the tradition of “solidarity – creativity – responsibility”, the collective of the Department of Hydraulics – Hydrology continues to innovate training content and methods, enhance the application of digital technology, integrate internationally with advanced training programs, contributing to the training of high-quality human resources to serve the cause of industrialization and modernization as the country strives to enter a new era.

With the contributions of the lecturers in the department, the Department of Hydraulics and Hydrology has achieved outstanding results in emulation campaigns:

• A commendation from the Prime Minister in 1998.
• The title of “Advanced Labor Collective” for many consecutive years.
• The Hydraulics Olympic team has achieved many high results in national mechanics Olympic competitions. First prize in the team category in the years: 1994, 2004, 2005, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017. Second prize in the team category in the years 2002, 2011, 2013.
