The Department of Ports and Waterways of Hanoi National University of Civil Engineering was established in August 1962, under the Faculty of Construction of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. The first members of the Department were Mr. Duong Quang Thanh, Mr. Tran Minh Quang and Mr. Ho Ngoc Luyen, all of whom graduated from the Ports and Waterways Department of Tianjin University (China). Up to now, the Department has had 34 teachers who have been teaching. The collective of the Department of Ports and Waterways up to now has: 1 Professor, 3 Associate Professors, 13 Doctors, 2 excellent teachers.

Currently, the Department is involved in training and teaching the majors of Hydraulic Works (in the field of Construction Engineering) and Logistics and Supply Chain Management. During the training process, the lecturers in the Department have always set the goal of improving the quality of training to produce generations of highly qualified students. In addition, the Department also participates in implementing research projects applying scientific and technological advances, large projects, large projects on Ports – Waterways and logistics, on marine works, on coastal and island protection works; on river regulation and flood and storm prevention works of our country. Some scientific and technological advances were successfully applied by the Department for the first time in Vietnam such as reverse circulation dike works, technology of lowering turtles to anchor buoys using hydraulic jets, Tetrapod wave breakers,…

On August 25, 2025, the President of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering issued a decision to assign members and heads of the professional groups under the school. The Port – Waterway professional group under the Faculty of Hydraulic Construction was built on the basis of the previous Department.
