In the atmosphere of nationwide jubilation celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025), the Veterans Association of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering organized a regular meeting and activity session to discuss the Association’s work.
At the meeting, Comrade Tran Dinh Trong – Chairman of the Veterans Association – on behalf of the Executive Committee, announced some of the Association’s achievements in the recent past and outlined some activities to be carried out in the near future.
Towards the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam and the Reunification of the Country, members of the Veterans Association shared stories, reminisced, and recalled heroic and tragic memories of their time in service. These memories were shared of the fiery battles at the most brutal battlefields of the resistance war, such as the Quang Tri Citadel, Khe Xanh, Buon Ma Thuot, and especially the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, from veterans who graduated from the University of Construction. Members listened to the stories of those who directly participated in the tragic battle in Long An, fought by the 207th Regiment – where nearly 300 martyrs were students from universities in Northern Vietnam, many of whom were students from the University of Construction. These memories, never before recorded in any documents, were shared with their comrades. The veterans couldn’t hide their tears of sorrow for their fallen comrades, but also felt immense pride in the heroic years of the nation.
The student soldiers and the memories of their comrades will always be remembered and cherished by future generations.
We invite you to share the memories of Comrade Hoang Van Tan – a member of the Veterans Association of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.
QUANG TRI
I don’t want to bring up sad memories.
My visit to Quang Tri
Winds blowing across central Vietnam
The train brought me there.
Oh, Quang Tri!
Where our division is located
Marching through burnt-out forests.
Scooping water to drink from the stream.
A ration bar to stave off hunger for one day.
We’re not afraid of densely packed coordinate bombs.
Not afraid of jungle rain or malaria.
We passed through death.
Let’s wait until tomorrow.
And today in the bright golden sunshine
The forest is so green, so incredibly green!
That’s a very deep green, the color of Quang Tri.
As if there had never been a war
But this afternoon in the cemetery
My teammates are still standing in line.
Standing at a rest, level with the tombstone.
Not a single incense stick
I stood there crying all alone.
Friends, why are you here?
To make this afternoon like every other afternoon.
My children don’t understand now.
A part of my youth
And how many soldiers?
They lie buried here, nestled among the mountains and hills.
No matter where we go in the future,
Let’s not forget the past of Quang Tri.
Let’s not forget the time of resistance against America.
To be able to be proud to be human today.
